The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) offers a compass in this journey, setting standards and requiring fertility clinics to publicly share their assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment outcomes. Results of in vitro fertilization (IVF), frozen embryo transfer (FET), and donor egg treatment can be found on the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) website, allowing you to view infertility success rates for individual fertility centers along with the national data summary. This depicts the national average based on data from every fertility center in the country.

Some of the terms you may come across when reviewing success rate data include:

Cycle Initiation: The count starts when a woman begins medications for an IVF cycle or, in natural cycles, the first day of the menstrual cycle when planning an ART procedure.
Egg Retrieval: All cycles that lead to egg retrieval are counted. If cycles are canceled before retrieval, they are still included in the denominator.
Fertilization: These eggs are then fertilized with sperm in the lab to create embryos
First embryo transfer refers to the first time an embryo is placed into the uterus after egg retrieval and fertilization.
Later embryo transfers involve transferring any remaining viable embryos that were not used in the first attempt. These embryos are often frozen and can be transferred in subsequent cycles without the need for another egg retrieval. In ASRM statistics, later embryo transfers include eggs thawed after being frozen for a year or more and embryos frozen for a year or more.
Fresh Embryo Transfer is a procedure where an embryo is created, incubated until it reaches the blastocyst stage and transferred into the uterus during the same IVF cycle it was created, without freezing.
Frozen Embryo Transfer is a procedure where a previously cryopreserved embryo is thawed and implanted into a woman’s uterus to achieve pregnancy.
Live Birth Rate: The number of live births is divided by the number of initiated cycles to give a percentage rate.

Being able to decode SART data is crucial for anyone interested in pursuing IVF. To put it simply, these rates are calculated by dividing the number of live births by the number of IVF cycles performed. Think of it as a report card showing how well a clinic performs in helping individuals or couples achieve their dream of having a baby. Follow this guide to understand the data that is meticulously collected from fertility clinics nationwide to provide insights into success rates and trends.


Live births per intended egg retrieval measures the number of live births resulting from each cycle where the intent was to retrieve eggs. To get this statistic, the number of live births from the first attempt at an embryo transfer is divided by the number of all started cycles within one year, which includes everything from cycle initiation to embryo transfer.


E.g. If out of 100 initiated cycles, 30 lead to live births, the live birth rate per intended egg retrieval would be 30%.


Live Births Per Second or Later Embryo Transfer measures your chances of having a baby if you’ve experienced more than one embryo transfer or used frozen eggs or embryos stored for more than 12 months. Therefore, this statistic is calculated by the number of live births that happen from a transfer that was not the very first one you tried or was a later embryo transfer divided by all the cases where an egg or embryo was thawed in preparation for an additional or delayed transfer (including if the egg or embryo was thawed by never transferred).

E.g. If there were 100 cycles where frozen embryo transfer was delayed and 50 of them lead to live births, the live birth rate per second or later embryo transfer would be 50%.


Live births per new patient measures the success rate for each new patient starting their IVF journey. This metric takes into account the number of new patients who have had at least one live birth after undergoing IVF treatments within one reporting year.


E.g. If a clinic starts treatment with 100 new patients in a year and 40 of those patients end up having a live birth at some point during their treatment journey, the live birth rate per new patient is 40%.


All Donor Eggs measures IVF cycles where embryos are made using eggs from a donor, not from the intended parent. This can include using fresh donor eggs, frozen donor eggs, frozen embryos that were made from donor eggs or donated embryos.


E.g. If a clinic starts treatment with 100 patients in a year using donor eggs and 60 of those patients end up having a live birth at some point during their treatment journey, the live birth rate per new patient is 60%.
