Q&A with Dr. Edwards

What do you like most about what you do?
I most enjoy the genuine and trusting relationships I am able to establish and foster with those patients who I am fortunate to work with. When individuals and couples are seeking supportive services, they are often doing so during a very vulnerable time and space in their life. Having the opportunity to be fully engaged and present with patients and able to learn from them and work with them to address their concerns is a powerful and humbling experience.

How can talking to a professional help during infertility treatment?
Talking to a professional can allow individuals and couples the opportunity to gain a greater sense of control and support during a time of need or crisis. It affords the opportunity to discuss one’s fears, concerns, worries, and joys in a supportive, productive and unbiased environment. It provides a time and space for self-reflection and intimate engagement that is not always prioritized or available during daily life.

What type of counseling services do you offer?
Fertility Centers of Illinois provide supportive therapy and counseling services to individuals and couples designed specifically to address those issues unique to their infertility care needs. We also offer supportive group therapy and patient-centered educational programs, in addition to psychological evaluation and assessment for collaborative reproductive treatments.

What is your approach to counseling?
My primary approach to counseling utilizes an empathic and supportive style, where the focus is on better understanding personal beliefs and experiences and how these have shaped patients as individuals. This includes their thoughts about themselves, others, the world and their place in it and helping to address those thoughts, feelings, and behaviors causing distress or concern.

Share something unique that most people don't know about you.
I have always had a fond interest in the exploration of culture and the idea of cultural globalization. Given this interest, I pursued a master’s degree in global public health to further explore the interplay between Eastern and Western medicine and therapeutic modalities.

What do you do for fun in your spare time? What about your hobbies?
I love to travel and cook. I enjoy learning cooking styles and traditions from around the world. I have a particular affinity for Japanese and Ethiopian cuisine.

What is your experience with treating those who have infertility?
The majority of my experience with infertility has been treating cancer patients who are undergoing treatment and/or those diagnosed young. When confronted with a cancer diagnosis, speaking with a therapist regarding family planning and infertility options helps patients explore and decide upon the next steps either before or after treatment initiation.
