Becoming a single father through surrogacy

Why do you want to share your story?

My main reason is to show other single parents that want to have a family of their own that it is possible and can be done.

When did you know you wanted to become a parent?

In my early 30s I started my journey – I wanted to be a father and have kids of my own. I already had some great practice as an uncle of five. My nieces and nephew are over quite often and it was amazing watching them grow up, but part of me wanted to have kids of my own and to have all these experiences with my own kids.

What led you to Fertility Centers of Illinois?

I did my homework. My agency  mentioned Fertility Centers of Illinois and a couple other options. When I saw the reviews for FCI and the amount of people worldwide that were coming here, I felt safe that it was the right choice. My first meeting with Dr. Sipe sealed the deal. He answered all the questions I had, and gave me a detailed step-by-step explanation, which put me at ease. He was there for each event, which made the process very comfortable and gave me peace of mind.

What treatment was involved?

I first found an egg donor, she had to undergo egg retrieval. Around the same time, I had to give my sperm as well. Fertility Centers of Illinois was able to create 11 embryos for future use. My gestational carrier (surrogate) was prepped with hormone treatments and my precious embryos were implanted. The first time we used two embryos and one took. This was my daughter Freya.

What helped you get through treatment?

Family, friends and my GC. My family is very close and my mother was there with me for every appointment. My GC kept in constant contact and allowed me to join her at any appointments I wanted to attend.

Do you have any words of hope for others?

That anyone can be a parent, that there is always a way. Between fertility options or having a surrogate carry your child, it can be done. And the people at FCI made the journey that much easier.

Tell us about your little miracle!

I have an amazing 21 month old named Freya and I have another baby on the way, due December 23rd. Freya is the best part of my day – each and every day. Getting to watch her hit every milestone and see new things makes me proud to be a father.
