Why do you want to share your story?

I wanted to share our story to let other fertility patients know that they are not alone. People do not understand the struggles individuals with infertility are going through, but often offer their advice anyway. It can be very infuriating to have others tell you “it’s going to be okay,” or “things happen for a reason”. Sometimes all we need is a hug and to know we are not alone.

What led you to the Fertility Centers of Illinois?

Our journey to parenthood started right after we got married. After trying to conceive on our own was unsuccessful, we sought the help of Fertility Centers of Illinois. After all of the initial testing, we were diagnosed with unexplained infertility.

We were advised to begin with intrauterine insemination (IUI). After only one round, my husband and I decided to take a break. Sometimes, as a fertility patient, it is difficult to accept your circumstances (especially when you see the ease of pregnancy for some other couples).

We came back with a renewed attitude. Dr. Hirshfeld-Cytron suggested we go right to in vitro fertilization (IVF). We had two unsuccessful attempts and I had to undergo further testing. We decided to do our third and final frozen embryo transfer. SUCCESS!

What helped you get through treatment?

I had a very strong emotional support system behind me. My husband and my mom were strong and supportive and helped me through the toughest days.I cried a lot after those failed frozen embryo transfers! There were days I felt like the dream of having a family would never come to fruition. It’s not only important to have a strong support system, but also to be open to other options in case things don’t go as planned. My husband and I “drew a line in the sand” and decided a third frozen embryo transfer would be it for us. If it didn’t work we were going to travel. But, that transfer was successful!

How would you describe your experience with your physician?

I appreciated the fact that Dr. Hirshfeld-Cytron was truthful and never gave me false hope. I was referred to Fertility Centers of Illinois from a family member who was a patient there. From the first time we stepped through the door, every member of FCI was compassionate and professional. I grew very close with many of the staff members at the Tinley Park office, because of how often I was in there. Michelle, Kathy, and Allison will be in my heart forever! The struggles of infertility are exhausting emotionally, physically, and financially. However, I am so grateful for Fertility Centers of Illinois, they gave us the opportunity to be parents, the most extraordinary gift of all.

Tell us about your little miracle!

I had the most amazing pregnancy and gave birth to a healthy baby boy! He is 2 years old now and the joys of being a mother consume me every single day. Robbie is a very busy and spirited little boy! It’s amazing to watch him grow and learn everyday.

Do you have any words of hope for others?

Take things one day at a time and take care of yourself! It’s important to focus on you and your significant other during this process. And do not feel guilty about skipping baby showers or children’s birthday parties!
